Animal Encounters in Games and Real Life: Connecting with Creatures

Animals have always played a significant role in my life, both in the real world and within the virtual realms I explore. Growing up on a farm in the beautiful countryside of Poland, I spent countless hours surrounded by animals—from the cows and goats to chickens and sheep. These creatures taught me responsibility, compassion, and the simple joys of nature. As an adult, I continue to feel that same connection to animals, but now, it also extends into the virtual world through the games I play. Whether it’s nurturing farm animals in Stardew Valley, hunting wild creatures in Red Dead Redemption, or encountering strange beings in Fallout, animals remain at the heart of many of my favorite experiences.

Real-Life Encounters: Growing Up with Animals Spending my childhood on the family farms in Czarny Dunajec, Zakopane, Nowy Targ, and Kościelisko gave me a unique bond with the animals around me. Every day, I was immersed in the rhythms of farm life, tending to animals, feeding them, and ensuring they were well cared for. My connection with these animals wasn't just practical; it was emotional. I remember the calming sounds of cows grazing, the playful antics of goats, and the endless affection of our dogs. Even the quiet moments spent with the chickens in the barn were comforting.

One of the most memorable experiences I had was with a goat I named Jasiek. He was stubborn, playful, and often got into trouble, but I loved him dearly. His antics brought both laughter and frustration, yet he always found a way to brighten my day. These animals weren’t just livestock; they were part of the family.

Animals in Games: A Digital Connection As I grew older, I moved away from the farm life, but my love for animals didn’t fade—it just took on a new form. Video games became an outlet for me to explore and connect with creatures in ways that were similar to, yet distinct from, real life. Games like Stardew Valley, Red Dead Redemption, and Fallout let me experience different kinds of animals in rich, immersive worlds.

Stardew Valley: Nurturing Virtual Farm Animals

In Stardew Valley, animals hold a special place. Just like in my childhood, I find joy in caring for animals on my digital farm. The feeling of raising cows, chickens, and goats, feeding them, and collecting eggs or milk, feels incredibly satisfying. The simple joy of watching them roam around or even petting them in the game brings back memories of the animals I grew up with. I’ve found that these in-game animals are more than just mechanics—they’re a way to replicate the nurturing side of myself that was honed during my time on the farm.

Red Dead Redemption: Wildlife in the Wild West

Red Dead Redemption presents another layer of animal encounters, but this time in a much more rugged, wild setting. Whether I’m hunting deer for food, encountering bears in the woods, or simply observing the wildlife in the game’s stunning natural environments, animals play a significant role in shaping the world of Red Dead. The game’s attention to detail in how animals behave—whether they’re part of the ecosystem or targets of a hunt—reminds me of my childhood, where everything in nature had its place. The thrill of hunting in the game can be compared to the excitement I felt as a child during farm chores, like rounding up animals or tracking down lost sheep in the field.

Fallout: Mutated Creatures in a Post-Apocalyptic World

In the world of Fallout, animals take on a completely different role. While the Fallout universe is mostly devoid of typical animals due to the fallout of nuclear war, mutated creatures—such as radroaches, deathclaws, and Mirelurks—are common. These mutated versions of animals are far removed from the peaceful creatures I knew in real life, but they still maintain a fascinating connection to the animals of the past. Fighting off these mutated beasts often takes a lot of strategy, and while they aren’t cute or lovable like farm animals, their presence in the world creates a unique, albeit dangerous, connection to the natural world, twisted by the effects of radiation.

Why Animals in Games Matter What I love most about these in-game animals is the emotional connection they build. Whether I’m feeding my digital goats in Stardew Valley or hunting wolves in Red Dead Redemption, the interactions with animals, even in a digital space, remind me of the importance of life and the bond we share with creatures, both real and fictional. Games give us the opportunity to engage with animals in ways that enhance the story, challenge our skills, or simply provide a moment of peace in an otherwise hectic world.

From Real Creatures to Virtual Companions Whether it’s my childhood farm experiences or the many animals I’ve encountered in video games, there’s a deep connection that ties the two worlds together. In real life, animals taught me lessons of care, patience, and responsibility. In video games, animals bring me closer to nature, even in a post-apocalyptic wasteland or a wild west setting. While virtual creatures may never replace the companionship of a real-life animal, they serve as a reminder of the bond we share with the animal kingdom, both in the physical world and in the digital realms we explore.
