Mariusz Perdek was born in Zabierzów Bocheński (according to other sources, in the neighboring Wola Zabierzowska). In any case, both of these villages are located near Niepołomice in the Lesser Poland Voivodeship. He also grew up in this area. Mariusz had two older sisters and a younger brother. The life of the siblings was quite difficult due to their father's alcoholism. The man, when he drank, was aggressive. Despite this, the mother tried to give her children a fairly normal childhood. Unfortunately, the woman died in 2009. The cause of death was cancer. The whole family was deeply affected by this loss.
The siblings always got along well, and after this tragedy, they tried to stick together even more. Their mother could no longer protect them from their father. On the other hand, most of the siblings were already adults and could stand up to him. Mariusz has always had a special bond with his 11-year-old sister Beata. They were the best of friends, they always supported and helped each other. Perdek told his sister several times that he would never break off contact with her. The boy wanted to start earning money as soon as possible to support his family financially. Right after graduating from high school, he went to work. He found employment in Niepołomice.
In 2014, Mariusz started dating 17-year-old Klaudia. They had a strong feeling despite quite a big age difference (Perdek was 8 years older). Soon the girl, who came from Krakow and studied there, moved to her beloved. At this point, it should be clarified that the Perdek family lived in a two-story house. Mariusz occupied the lower part, and Beata and her husband lived upstairs. The apartments also had separate entrances. It allowed some kind of privacy.
The 25-year-old tried very hard to make sure Klaudia didn't miss anything. He often bought her gifts and gave her some of the money he earned. The girl, however, did not appreciate it. The two quarreled many times. They also broke up a few times only to get back together quickly. So this relationship was certainly turbulent, and could even be described as toxic.
Describing the relationship of lovers, it is worth mentioning the situation that took place in November 2014. Klaudia was supposed to come home late at that time. Mariusz decided to go out to pick her up at the bus stop so that she would not return alone after dark. He called the girl and gave her the information. However, she was not satisfied. She asked her partner to stay home. Perdek, however, did not heed this request.
When he met Klaudia, it turned out that she was not alone. She was accompanied by a friend and several colleagues. At the sight of Mariusz, everyone (including his girlfriend) started throwing insults at him. There was probably also a scuffle. The nervous 25-year-old returned home and told Beata about the whole situation. It turned out that the 17-year-old had played truant that day. A few weeks later, someone smashed a window in Mariusz's apartment with a stone. It is believed that this may have been related to the November incident. However, the perpetrator of this act of vandalism could not be identified.
Mariusz experienced separations very much, especially at the beginning. After one of them, he even attempted suicide. Fortunately, this situation did not end tragically. The man decided that he needed the help of a specialist. So he started going to a psychologist. In February 2015, he was also supposed to start therapy. Unfortunately, he didn't live to see that moment.
On January 19, 2015, Beata was getting ready for work. Mariusz visited her shortly before leaving the house. He mentioned then that Klaudia was packing and that she was to move out of his house that day. The 25-year-old also added that he would help her move to her hometown of Krakow and go with her by bus.
Beata later recalled that her brother did not seem depressed by the situation. He's probably used to these constant separations by now, or maybe he's just had enough of them. It was he who was supposed to end the relationship in this case. Around 5:00 p.m., Mariusz's sister received a strange phone call from Klaudia. The very fact that a 17-year-old called her was very unusual. Even stranger were the words of the girl. She said that Mariusz did not answer her phone and that in her opinion he was dead.
Seriously upset, Beata called her beloved brother. However, he answered the phone without hesitation. He was surprised by his sister's worried tone. The woman made sure that everything was fine with Mariusz. She added that in the evening she would talk calmly about the whole situation. However, Beata still felt uneasy, so she contacted her brother again about an hour later.
The 25-year-old said he was going to visit his friend Mateusz, who worked in a shop in Niepołomice. Then he was supposed to go straight home. Around 8:00 p.m., Perdek is not home yet. So Beata calls her brother again. This one is still with his friend, but he is slowly getting ready to return, as requested by his older sister. In fact, he leaves the store soon, which is confirmed by the surveillance video. He had to go to the bus stop which was nearby.
However, Mariusz does not appear at home, so Beata tries to contact him several times. This time the man doesn't answer. Around 10:00 p.m., his phone goes offline, which was later confirmed by investigators. Perhaps Perdek turned it off himself or the battery ran down. The police also established that the 25-year-old was exchanging messages with Klaudia before the phone activity stopped. Mariusz did not return to his apartment at night.
The next day, a neighbor of the Perdkas provided important information. She said that around 21:30 she was crossing the bridge in Niepołomice. Then she saw Mariusz, who was leaning his back against the railing while talking on the phone. The woman had known the man for many years. So it's unlikely she mistook him for someone else at the time. Especially since she was sure she saw him. This was also confirmed by the description of the man's clothes.
The relatives immediately reported him missing to the police. Surprisingly, the services reportedly started the investigation immediately, although only a dozen or so hours had passed since the disappearance. Beata also started searching on her own. The woman managed to reach the homeless man who lived in barracks near the bridge. He said that on the night of his disappearance, he heard a man nearby arguing on the phone. However, it is not known whether it was Mariusz or someone else. If it were a coincidence, however, it would be a very peculiar one. On the other hand, according to investigators, the missing man's phone was not used after 10:00 p.m. According to the homeless man, the quarrel probably took place after midnight.
On January 21, that is, just two days after the disappearance, the police commission divers to examine the Vistula near the bridge. A corpse is found, but DNA testing excludes that it is Perdek's body. Firefighters are also joining the search. Unfortunately, these actions do not bring any results. The same is true for checking industrial cameras. Only the previously mentioned monitoring from a friend's shop captured the figure of Mariusz.
Family and friends do not give up. They put up hundreds of posters with the image of the missing person in the area. The strange thing is that all these posters are torn down quickly. After re-sticking them and the requests of loved ones to leave them this time, the situation repeats itself. It is not known who is destroying the posters and why. It is also puzzling that Klaudia is not involved in the search at all.
Weeks pass and the case remains unsolved. With each passing day, it seems less and less likely to find a man. An unexpected call from Perdek's friend brings hope to his relatives. In June 2016, Sławomir calls Beata and asks her brother to come on the phone. The surprised woman replies that it is impossible, because Mariusz had been missing more than half a year earlier.
This time Sławek is amazed. He says that Mariusz contacted him two or three months ago. During the conversation, he admitted that he had parted with Klaudia and moved out of his family home. He lived in Krakow, but did not want to reveal a specific address. Instead, he asked for a meeting. The most important thing, however, was that the friend also told about the details of Mariusz's life that only he or his closest relatives could know. On the other hand, Perdek could have handed them over before they went missing.
Speechless Beata asked a friend to give her the phone number from which her brother called. Slawomir replied that he had this number saved on the previous SIM card. He said he had to put it on the phone. He promised to send the number the next day. So it happened. Beata immediately contacted the police and provided the information received. After half an hour, Mariusz's friend calls his sister again. This time he claims the number is wrong.
Beata asks for an explanation of the situation, but the man behaves strangely and avoids answering. Meanwhile, investigators are checking the number sent. Unfortunately, it turns out that he was not registered. This makes it practically impossible to find its owner. Moreover, the number is no longer active. Later, relatives and the police contact Sławek a few more times, and even his sister, who was present during the conversation with Mariusz. The man confirms the information given earlier.
Unfortunately, to this day it has not been possible to determine what happened to Mariusz Perdek. There are several theories that explain the possible fate of the man. I will present the ones that seem most likely.
The first involves the man's suicide. This could be supported by the fact that on the day of his disappearance he parted with Klaudia. He also had one failed suicide attempt in the past. He was finally seen for the last time on a bridge from which he could jump. On the other hand, it was hard to tell if this was another of many breakups or this time it was a final breakup. According to Beata, her brother did not show that he was particularly concerned about this situation.
According to another hypothesis, Marius could have been killed. The missing person's sister believes in this possibility the most. On the one hand, it is unlikely, because Perdek did not have any enemies. It is known, however, that he lent money to friends. One of the debtors may not want to repay the loan. To save money, he could have decided to kill Mariusz.
Another theory is that Mariusz had an accident. Someone could, for example, hit him on the way back home. The perpetrator then hid the body to avoid responsibility for causing the death. This option cannot be ruled out, although in this case there could be traces of blood on the road or shoulder.
The last scenario assumes that Perdek disappeared voluntarily and is still alive. This theory can be confirmed by the information obtained from Sławomir. Even if Mariusz actually moved to Krakow or any other city, why didn't he contact his relatives? Why didn't he inform Beata, who is constantly looking for him to this day? Let's hope that one day this mystery will be solved and the loved ones will finally find peace.
