Five countries that can survive a nuclear winter after a nuclear war have been identified

Scientists from New Zealand have listed the countries that could survive a hypothetical global nuclear war. There are five of them in total, they are located at the antipodes. The study is published in the journal "Risk Analysis".

Researchers at the University of Otago have assessed the impact on agriculture of a sharp decline in solar illumination due to a nuclear war, as well as in the event of a large asteroid impact or a massive volcanic eruption.

It is noted that in the event of a nuclear war between Russia and NATO, the atmosphere can be contaminated with 150 teragrams of soot (during the detonation of most warheads in the world). This could reduce agricultural production on the planet by 80% and in the northern hemisphere by 100%.

The devastating effects of a nuclear winter will last 5 to 10 years. Scientists say that New Zealand, Australia, Iceland, Vanuatu and the Solomon Islands will be able to produce their own agricultural products, despite the decrease in temperature and the amount of sunlight. This means that these countries have a chance to survive the nuclear winter and feed their population.
