A new strain of the immunodeficiency virus that causes AIDS has been discovered in Cyprus.
The new strain was discovered by scientists at the University of Cyprus and the National HIV Laboratory in Los Alamos, New Mexico. It was named "CRF91_cpx". It has been identified in 14 men of non-traditional sexual orientation.
"CRF91_cpx has been detected in 14 people with HIV-1 living in Cyprus. An epidemiological analysis shows that the CRF91_cpx strain mainly circulates among Cypriot men who have sex with men infected in Cyprus.
In addition, the newspaper explains that the clinical signs of the new strain are still unknown.
HIV is a slowly progressive infectious disease caused by the human immunodeficiency virus. It affects the human immune system, after which the patient becomes susceptible to other infectious and neoplastic diseases.
