Polish Ghost Stories

Stories about ghosts appearing in different places in Poland can be really scary. Perhaps you have ever been to one of these places without being aware of what is in there?

The girl from the villa at ul. Morskie Oko 5 in Warsaw

Legend has it that the young girl found shelter in a villa at ul. Morskie Oko during the Warsaw Uprising. Hanna, because that was her name, fell in love with one of the fighting soldiers and decided to give her beloved a bouquet of flowers. At night she went out to the garden wearing a white shirt. It was her last walk - the enemy bullet killed the girl. Since then, Hanna shows up at the villa and scares unwanted guests.

Marysieńka's spirit

Marysieńka was a beautiful and clever woman. Her first husband was voivode Jan Zamoyski, and the second was king Jan III Sobieski. Sobieski showered his wife with luxury - he gave her love, pearls, furs, and exquisite bedding. The couple's feeling was very strong, but the king's funeral ceremonies overshadowed the ideal relationship between the ruler and Marysieńka.

Shortly after his death, on June 17, 1696, Marysieńka quarreled with her eldest son Jakub. He drove her out of the palace, accusing her of hiding great riches. As the funeral procession passed through the streets of Warsaw, someone shouted to open the coffin and look at the king's face for the last time. Marysieńka protested, but she did not manage to do anything about it. When the lid was removed, it turned out that the king did not have a crown on his head - his wife took it.

Now Marysieńka is said to appear in the form of a crown-shaped cloud that slides over Miodowa Street in Warsaw.

The spirit of a monk who haunted Olkuszanka

An archaeologist from Olkusz, Jerzy Roś, once worked in the Machnicki manor in Olkusz. One day a woman came to him and asked if there were any graves under the building. She said that for two years she had been plagued by a nightmare - a monk's spirit came to her, took her hand and led her to the basement of the manor. There he showed wooden shelves with shoe boxes on them. He and his fellows, he said, would lie there and would not find peace until they were buried in a holy ground.

Jerzy Roś said that the woman accurately described the basement, even though she could not know her. Later it turned out that the boxes actually contained the remains of monks excavated in the 1970s during archaeological excavations at the Augustinian monastery in Olkusz. The monks were eventually buried in the old cemetery, and the ghost stopped haunting the woman.

The curse of the gypsy woman

Once, in Oświęcim, two distinguished merchant families wanted reconciliation. The contract was to be sealed by a wedding intercourse. The younger son of the mayor, Piotr, after reaching the age of majority, was to marry Anusia - the daughter of a wealthy town councilor. Preparations for the wedding were underway.

At that time, a woman named Dorota appeared in the city. Mieszczka - as it was said about her - fell in love with Piotr. Then the Gypsies came to Oświęcim. One night, Dorothy, at the urging of the maid, went to the Gypsy camp and asked for a potion that would help her win Piotr's love. Having paid for a gypsy named Riksa, she returned to town.

The next day a spell fell on the son of the alderman. He broke the wedding contracts and succumbed to Dorota. Discarded Anusia could not cope with the loss of her beloved. At night, in a white dress, she stood on the bank of the Soła river and threw herself into the river. Piotr experienced her death very much and, unable to forgive himself for losing her, he entered the convent.

After a long search, Gypsy Riksa was found and brought to Auschwitz. At the request of the Council, an investigation was carried out, which revealed that everything was to blame for Dorota, but it was the Gypsy who was brought before the court, accusing him of being guilty of casting spells and the death of Anusia. It was then that she was tested by tears, water, and fire. When no confirmation of her collaboration with the devil was found, she was imprisoned and tortured.

During the trial, however, the court accepted the charges against Riksja and sentenced her to death by burning at the stake. Then the Gypsy, leaving the room, cursed the inhabitants of Oświęcim. Currently, a ghost appears over the Oświęcim castle at night - it is not known, however, whether it is the spirit of Anusia or a Gypsy.

The Black Lady from the Wielopolski Palace

The current Kraków Magistrate, where the Mayor and the City of Kraków have their seat, is located in the former Wielopolski Palace. This building, built in the 16th century, is related to the story of the Black Lady. The woman has been wandering around its corridors for 150 years. The last records of her appearance come from pre-war times, when the ghost was met by a janitor on duty in the palace. Who is the mysterious figure? Nobody knows, but in 1903, when radiators were installed in the building, a young woman's skeleton was found walled up in the wall on the first floor ...

Ghost from Krzysztofory Palace

The spirit of the Black Lady is said to also appear in one of the historic buildings on the Krakow market, called the Krzysztofory Palace - from the figure of St. Krzysztof, which was on the facade. The ghost that haunts the palace is said to be Sebastian Lubomirski's widow, Anna née Braniecka. After her husband's death, the woman lived in the palace and died there. Today, when he shows up unexpectedly, he predicts the exact date of his death to the unfortunate he meets.

True Ghost Stories

Ghost stories based on facts are by far the scariest! We have collected a few of them.

Death of Elisa Lam

Elisa Lam, the daughter of Hong Kong immigrants, embarked on a lonely journey along the West Coast in 2013. She reported her trip to her family every day. On January 26, she checked into the Cecil Hotel in Los Angeles. On January 31, she was due to continue her journey to Santa Cruz, but she did not call her parents, who were worried and called the police.

Two weeks after the disappearance of a woman who has not yet been found, police released a video showing Lam behaving strangely in the elevator and talking to someone. The woman entered and left the elevator once, making specific movements with her hands. It was in this video that she was last seen.

In the meantime, hotel customers noticed that the tap water tasted strange - it had a disgusting, sweet taste and a darker color. It soon became clear where this change came from. Elisa's naked decomposing body was found in the water tanks supplied to the hotel. Although her death was considered accidental, the police were unable to fully explain her, as access to the roof on which the tanks were located was secured with locks and an alarm.

Interestingly, the Cecil Hotel does not have a good reputation. It gained fame as a hideout for murderers after serial killers hid there, incl. Richard Ramirez and Jack Unterweger.

The most haunted house in America

This spooky ghost story began in 1871 when Charles Wright Congelier moved into his home at 1129 Ride Avenue in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, with his wife, Lyda, and Essie's maid. In winter, Lyda caught her husband having an affair with Essie, then stabbed him, and cut off the girl's head.

In 1900, Dr. Adolph C. Brunrichter caused an explosion that smashed the windows of the house and prompted the police to search it. It contains the remains of his nightmarish experiments designed to revive the heads of dead young women.

From then on, the house was considered haunted. It is said that Thomas Edison tried to contact the deceased there. Ultimately, the building was destroyed in an accident at the Equitable Gas Company in 1927.

The fate of Anneliese Michel

The fictional films "The Exorcism of Emily Rose", "Requiem" and "Anneliese: The Exorcist Tapes" were made based on the events that took place in the life of Anneliese Michel. Do you already know why this story is so terrible?

Anneliese was born in 1952 in Germany. She grew up in a very religious family, she liked the company of her peers. At 16, she began suffering from epilepsy. After some time, the symptoms of the disease began to worsen, so she was forced to isolate herself from friends and undertake hospital treatment.

In the fall of 1970, doctors admitted, however, that they were powerless in the face of the lack of treatment progress, despite the use of all methods available at the time. Soon the girl began to develop hallucinations. Anneliese said that while praying she sees devilish faces and hears voices saying she has been condemned. Anneliese drank her urine, ate flies and spiders, chewed coal, bit off the heads of dead birds - the things that happened to her were terrifying!

It was only seven years after the onset of these first disturbing symptoms that Josef Stangl, a German bishop, gave her official consent to her exorcisms. The Anneliese exorcisms were conducted by two priests - the parish priest Ernst Alt and the Salvatorian Arnold Renz. Most of the exorcisms were recorded on 52 audio tapes. During the last exorcism, Anneliese received absolution. She died the next night, July 1, 1976. The girl's parents and two priests were accused of manslaughter.
