Krakow Legends - Legend about the Dragon

Once upon a time, during the reign of Prince Krak - the legendary founder of the city of Krakow - young girls were constantly disappearing, and no one from Krakow knew what had happened to them.

According to the legend it turned out that there was a dragon living in a cave near at the foot of Wawel Hill. The dragon was said to not only have eaten cows, pigs and all kinds of animals, but his delicacy was the young virgin girls.

Prince Krak, therefore, announced: "Whoever kills the dragon will get half of the kingdom from me and my daughter for a wife." Many brave knights fought the dragon, nevertheless, they failed to beat him. In the end, a young shoemaker came up with a great idea! He stuffed the sheep's skin with sulfur and threw it under the dragon's cave. The hungry monster saw a tasty lamb, he did not think for long - he devoured it in one breath.

Immediately afterwards, the Dragon felt a burning sensation in his stomach. With every moment he was making hell more and more. Thirsty, he ran to the bank of the Vistula River and began to greedily drink the water. He drank some water but could not quench his thirst. So he drank until he burst! The city was freed from the terrible dragon, and the shoemaker received the promised reward from the king and married his daughter.

Dragon's pit

The cave, which according to legend was inhabited by the dragon is open to visitors. The string of mushrooms is 81 meters long. You can see them at any time of the year except in winter. You can get to the cave by going down the winding stairs straight from the top of Wawel Hill. At the exit from the cavern, there is a sculpture of a dragon that will breathe real fire.
