Humankind likes to predict future events like floods, wars etc. Happily, they have been wrong. Some people believe that the end of days would really happen. But probably one day will really be our last day?
Back in 2012 some people really did believe that the end would come. They based their idea on the Maya calendar. The end was predicted to occur on 21/12/12, but then nothing happened.
But why do people like to predict apocalyptic events? One might think that some people would want the world to end.
Extinction is a big threat to humanity. University of Oxford or Cambridge's Project for Existential Risk did some research about humanity's existence. So just how might the end of the world go to pass?
Science-fiction writers, such as H.G. Wells, wrote of an alien invasion in War of the Worlds. For now, we don't have any proof of life outside of our planet.
Some conspiracy theorists claim that a mysterious planet is known as Nibiru, or Planet X, is due to pass close to Earth. Is Nibiru home to aliens?
Linguist Zecharia Sitchin's 1976 book called Twelfth Planet claims that Nibiru is inhabited by an alien race called the Anunnaki, who are referred to in the Bible as the Nephilim. He also writes that the Anunnaki were unwilling to do the hard work themselves, so create a new slave race by blending their DNA with humans. His work is based on many 'ancient astronaut' theories, that claim aliens visited the Earth and altered the path of human history - least of all by building the pyramids.
Some theorist claim that Planet X actually does exist and is home to intelligent life and they will our world to an end.
Is Planet X real? Some people believe so.
Other ways in which the world could end:
⦁ collision with a large asteroid or a comet (the same way dinosaurs been wiped out)
⦁ heat up by sun or supernova explosion
⦁ supervolanoes explosion
⦁ giant tsunami
⦁ shifting of Earth's magnetic poles
⦁ pandemic, such as a virus
⦁ the collapse of our planet's ecosystem
Or maybe more destructive ones like:
⦁ world wars
⦁ terrorism
⦁ nuclear war
Or maybe one day we will create AI (artificial intelligence) that will finish us of.
If you're worried that the world might soon, I wouldn't as there is little agreement it would actually happen. In 2013 research from St Andrew's University in Scotland suggest that it would take 2 billion years before the Sun would reach temperatures high enough to leave the planet without oceans and enough carbon dioxide for plants to survive.
But before the Scary Day would arrive, we might as well just sit back and enjoy the ride.... no matter how long we have left.
