On August 14, 2008, aboard the container ship BBC Ecuador, docked at the port of Galveston near Houston, Texas, a scenario unfolded that continues to haunt investigators and family members. A 28-year-old Polish sailor, Piotr Piela, simply vanished into thin air. He left all his personal belongings, including his cell phone, in the cabin. Eighteen years have passed since then, and in his family home in Zgorzelec, his room still looks exactly as if Piotr had stepped out for a moment. What really happened on that warm August night, just 70 meters from the American coast?
Piotr was born on December 12, 1980, in Zgorzelec, Lower Silesia. He grew up on the border, where the Polish city and the German city of Görlitz form the so-called Europastadt, separated only by the Lusatian Neisse River. From an early age, water and ships were his greatest obsession. At the age of four, he began walking in a peculiar way – rocking from side to side with stiff legs. His concerned mother, Joanna, took the boy to an orthopedist. The doctor then heard a surprising explanation from the little one: he didn't have any motor problems – he was simply practicing his gait on the rocking deck of a ship to avoid falling overboard.
Piotr consistently pursued his goal. After high school, he enrolled in the Faculty of Navigation at the Maritime University of Szczecin. His loved ones remembered him as an athletic, bright, and well-read young man who could talk endlessly about his passion for the sea. However, his debut, six-month cruise off Singapore in October 2002 changed everything.
After returning from his first long voyage, Piotr became silent, thoughtful, and restless. He struggled with insomnia and smoked heavily. His mother recalled that he would wake up at night, screaming in panic: "Don't let them in!" A conversation with a trusted friend, who was a prosecutor, revealed that something traumatic had happened on the ship during the voyage. Due to his poor mental health, Piotr took a leave of absence.
Although the doctor diagnosed schizophrenia and prescribed medication, the family believed this was a shortcut – Piotr needed psychotherapy, not strong pharmaceuticals. The situation was complicated by the fact that his mother helped him obtain a military category D, which saved him from conscription but also closed the door to returning to full-time studies. Piotr deeply resented her for this. Eventually, he switched to part-time studies and returned to work on a ship. He completed a total of seven voyages, and it seemed the worst was over – he returned from each voyage joyful, happy, and fulfilled.
Piotr's eighth voyage was scheduled to begin on July 30, 2008, on the Norwegian merchant ship BBC Ecuador. The route took him from Brazil to the United States, and the ship was commanded by a Polish captain whom Piotr knew well. However, before departure, troubling signs emerged. Some of the crew on the ship were supposed to be his colleagues from the first, traumatic voyage to Singapore. His mother is convinced that Piotr felt threatened and was fleeing from these people.
A few weeks before the voyage, the young sailor approached him with a surprising question: "Mom, what if I became a missionary?" Joanna told him to do what he felt was right. Police investigations later revealed that the boy had indeed been searching the internet for information about missions. Just before leaving, while smoking a cigarette with his aunt, Piotr confessed: "I'd tell you something, but you'd blurt it out." The conversation was never completed.
While Piotr was already at sea, an incident occurred at the family home in Zgorzelec that Joanna interpreted as a bad omen. In the kitchen, she noticed her son's gray-brown mug. It was sparkling clean. The custom in their home was for their mother to simply rinse the grounds from the mug, and Piotr would wash it himself upon returning. The sight of the clean mug gave Joanna a sudden, stabbing feeling of unease. She wanted to call her son, but she thought it was absurd. A few days later, on August 15, 2008, the telephone rang at their house.
On August 13, 2008, the ship docked in Corpus Christi, Texas. Piotr asked the captain to let him ashore, but he was refused. A day later, on August 14, the container ship anchored in a roadstead near Galveston, just 70 meters from shore.
At 6:00 a.m., Piotr was scheduled to take over the watch. Known for his punctuality, his absence immediately alerted his colleagues. When they entered his cabin, no one was there. All his personal belongings—clothes, maritime agency documents, and a cell phone—were left behind. Only a life jacket was found abandoned on the ship's side.
Despite an immediate search by the U.S. Coast Guard, there was no trace of Piotr. Less than two weeks later, his suitcase was returned to Zgorzelec. Although it was missing his wallet, ID, and credit card, no transactions or withdrawals were ever recorded in his bank account.
American detectives quickly ruled the case a suicide. The family categorically rejects this version. Piotr was an excellent swimmer, and the distance to shore was only 70 meters. This distance could have been easily covered by even an average swimmer. Galveston is a port known for attracting many people to the water to escape and pursue the "American dream."
Did Piotr escape to join the missionaries? There were many such organizations operating along the route. The missing man's mother, who flew to Houston on her own twice, discovered several unusual clues:
- a young man wearing a hood who matched Piotr's description was seen in a Polish church in Houston;
- a Polish priest in San Antonio reacted to the story of a missing Pole with a piercing, long look and promised to tell the boy to talk to his mother;
- another priest allegedly helped Peter get a job in San Antonio;
An American judge suggested that Piotr may be deliberately avoiding contact with his loved ones, fearing detection and deportation from the US.
While in San Antonio, Joanna spotted a boy on the street whose build, bowed head, and distinctive gait perfectly matched her son's. Only when she got closer did she realize he was a dark-skinned man. The encounter was a profound shock to her.
Today, the Piel family lives in the shadow of this tragedy. His younger brother, Paweł, lives in Ireland and has lost hope, dismissing the possibility of his brother's survival as a pipe dream. His father has serious hearing problems and hearing implants, and his mother has undergone several spinal surgeries. In the eighteen years since his disappearance, both of Piotr's grandmothers have died. His beloved dog, Ogryzek, whom Piotr brought as a puppy and who waited for him for 16 years without success, has also passed away.
However, Piotr's room in Zgorzelec remains untouched. On the desk lie half-smoked cigarettes, a sailor's hat, and an open, unfinished book. Joanna still delicately dusts them, careful not to disturb any of the items.
