On the evening of February 26th, 2010, Wolverhampton’s usually quiet skies were pierced by something unexplainable. It wasn't a plane, drone, or weather balloon. According to witness Mark Goode, what he saw that night was “alive.”
It began as a calm, clear Friday night in Ashmore Park, a suburb on the city's edge. Around 9:45 PM, Mark stepped outside to take a phone call in his back garden. That’s when he noticed a bright, glowing orange orb—larger than any star or satellite—hovering motionless above the rooftops.
“At first, I thought it was a plane coming in low, but it wasn’t moving,” he later told the Express & Star.
“It glowed with this deep orange hue, like fire, but it didn’t flicker. Then it pulsed. Almost like it was breathing.”
🌕 More Than a Lantern?
Mark ran inside to get his wife, who also witnessed the orb. They watched it hang in the air for about 15 seconds before it shot upwards at a sharp angle—vanishing into the clouds without a sound. There were no blinking aviation lights, no noise, and no trail.
Skeptics, including the Ministry of Defence, later dismissed the sighting as a Chinese lantern released as part of a local celebration. But Mark wasn’t convinced.
“I’ve seen lanterns. They flicker and drift. This was something else—it was controlled. It knew we were watching it. I’ll never forget how it pulsed... like it was alive.”
🗂️ Similar Sightings?
Interestingly, Mark’s encounter wasn’t isolated. In the weeks before and after his report, dozens of West Midlands residents contacted local radio stations and UFO forums describing orange orbs behaving erratically—hovering, accelerating vertically, or disappearing without sound.
Some of the key similarities:
-
Silent movement
-
Pulsing, fire-like glow
-
Sudden vanishing acts
-
Sighting clusters near Wednesfield, Cannock, and Wolverhampton city centre
These similarities hint at a pattern of anomalous aerial phenomena rather than a random lantern release.
🛸 The “Orb” Phenomenon: A Wider Mystery
Orange orbs are a recurring theme in modern UFOlogy. Often referred to as “plasma-like entities” or “intelligent spheres,” they have been reported across the globe:
-
In Hessdalen, Norway, scientists have been tracking glowing balls of light for decades.
-
In Skinwalker Ranch, USA, orange orbs have been linked to strange creature sightings and electronic failures.
-
In Rendlesham Forest, just a few hours from Wolverhampton, similar lights were documented by US military personnel in 1980.
Could the Wolverhampton orb be part of this same phenomenon?
🛑 Why It Still Matters
While official explanations often lean toward natural or man-made causes, the sheer number of witnesses and the unique behaviour of the orb raise questions that remain unanswered.
Mark Goode never sought fame. He simply wanted answers. More than a decade later, his story still circulates on Reddit, UFO forums, and West Midlands mystery blogs, where enthusiasts continue to debate: Was it a drone, a secret military device, or something truly otherworldly?
“All I know,” Mark said in his final statement on the matter, “is that it wasn’t from around here.”
