The Crying Girl of Błędów Forest

Deep in the sands and shadows of Błędów Forest, nestled on the western edge of Poland’s Dąbrowa Basin, there’s a clearing locals rarely speak of—and even more rarely visit. It’s said that if you find yourself there after nightfall, you may hear a soft weeping carried on the wind. Some say it’s the wind itself. Others know better.

They call her Dziewczyna z Łez—The Girl of Tears.

A Lost Child or a Lingering Curse?

According to the village of Chechło, which borders the forest, the tale dates back to the 18th century. A young girl named Zosia vanished while gathering mushrooms with her siblings. The forest was searched for days, but no trace of her was found. Her mother, a widow known for her herbal knowledge, went mad with grief—wandering the trees by lantern light for weeks.

Then, one night, her body was found at the edge of the clearing. She had hanged herself from a twisted pine, eyes open, lips cracked in a final scream.

But Zosia never came home.

Over the next decades, sightings began. Hunters would hear faint sobbing while tracking game. Children would wake from dreams of a pale girl reaching through their window, her hands covered in black moss. One woodcutter, in 1923, claimed he followed the weeping sound to the clearing—only to find footprints in the sand... leading in, but never out.

Modern Encounters

In 1997, a pair of students camping illegally in the forest reported an encounter. Their statement, recorded by local police, describes a "thin girl in a white shift" standing at the edge of their campfire light. When they called out, she turned—and her face was a hollow blur.

They fled before dawn.

To this day, locals avoid the clearing, known simply as Płacząca Polana—the Weeping Glade. No trails lead to it on official maps, but those who’ve lived long in the region can sometimes be persuaded to point toward it—with a warning.

What the Elders Say

One babcia in nearby Klucze, who asked to remain unnamed, offered this:

“She is not a girl. Not anymore. When a soul is taken by the woods, the woods keep it. The crying is only what’s left of her. But the anger—that stays.”

Have you ever walked the edge of Błędów Forest? Heard a sound that didn’t belong to the trees?

Share your stories below—or dare to visit the Weeping Glade. But if you hear crying... don’t answer.
