Red Dead Redemption: Undead Nightmare – The Undead West

Zombies in the Wild West? On paper, it might seem like a tired trope, but Rockstar Games pulls it off in Undead Nightmare, an expansion for Red Dead Redemption. At first, you might wonder: “Isn’t this just one zombie too far?” However, as the game unfolds, it becomes clear that this expansion was a stroke of brilliance.

Undead Nightmare kicks off with John Marston leading a quiet life on his farm with his family, until the night his drunken uncle turns into a zombie and attacks. Soon, Marston embarks on a journey to uncover why the dead have risen, turning the once peaceful West into a nightmare.

For those who have explored the world of Red Dead Redemption, the map will feel familiar, but this time it’s covered in a sinister, gloomy atmosphere, enhanced by eerie graphic filters. As you progress through the game, the sun will shine once again in areas you liberate, offering both safety and new resources.

New Challenges and Weapons

The Undead Nightmare expansion introduces several new challenges, such as the Four Horsemen of the Apocalypse. Each horse is unique, with special abilities—like the Warhorse, which sets zombies on fire as you ride through hordes of the undead. You’ll also gain a handy new weapon: the torch, which lets you fight off zombies in hand-to-hand combat by setting them on fire.

The world may be familiar, but the challenges are fresh. You’ll encounter new types of zombies, some of which are faster and more dangerous than others. The traditional Red Dead tactics of cover-based shooting are replaced by a "hit & run" approach, as you use quick shots to clear enemies before fleeing from larger zombie hordes. The increased tension and frantic combat create a new layer of excitement, though the repetitive nature of the encounters can cause fatigue after a while.

Old Friends and New Horrors

In true Rockstar fashion, Undead Nightmare doesn’t skimp on story or character development. You’ll meet familiar faces from the base game, like Seth Briars, West Dickens, and Bonnie MacFarlane, who each have their own quirky missions involving the undead. The cutscenes are brilliantly done, maintaining the high level of quality that fans of Red Dead Redemption expect.

However, it’s not just about fighting zombies. The expansion adds new outfits, challenges, and mythical creatures, ensuring that there’s always something to do—even if you’ve already explored the original game’s world.

An Unexpected Gem

Despite some of the gameplay's repetitive nature, Undead Nightmare is an excellent expansion. It may not be a game-changer in the traditional sense, but it successfully injects new life into the Red Dead Redemption experience. For those who miss the open world of Red Dead and want to spice things up with some zombie mayhem, this expansion is an easy recommendation.
