Powerful G4 geomagnetic storm

On June 29, the Earth was hit by a powerful geomagnetic storm that could have serious consequences for our daily activities. According to data from the ACE satellite, the coronal mass ejection (CME) produced on June 25, 2024 hit our planet shortly after 09:30 UTC, causing violent disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field.

The G4 - Severe geomagnetic storm, which began at 14:18 UTC time, is one of the most serious phenomena of this type that we have encountered in recent years. These types of events occur approximately 100 times per solar cycle, and their epicenter is usually located in areas north of the 45th parallel.

Strong geomagnetic storms can cause serious problems in many areas of our lives. Experts warn that in the coming hours and days we can expect, among others: voltage problems in power grids, disruptions in satellite operation, and even interruptions in radio communications.

According to the National Space Weather Prediction Center (NOAA/SWPC), geomagnetic storm G4 began at 11:25 UTC, when the first signs of increasing geomagnetic activity were observed. Over the next two hours, the situation gradually worsened until it reached G4 - Severe Geomagnetic Storm at 14:18 UTC.

These types of violent disturbances in the Earth's magnetic field are caused by strong solar outbursts such as coronal mass ejections (CMEs). In the case of the current storm, a CME produced on June 25, 2024 reached our planet and caused significant disruptions in the Earth's magnetic field.

Geomagnetic storms are classified on a scale from G1 (Mild) to G5 (Extremely Severe), depending on the strength of the disturbance. The G4 storm we are currently experiencing is classified as Severe and occurs approximately 100 times in one 11-year solar cycle.

Experts emphasize that although such phenomena are relatively rare, their potential consequences can be serious. It is therefore important that authorities and operators of key infrastructure are prepared to deal with disruptions caused by severe geomagnetic storms.
