Disturbing news from Great Britain

King Charles III, the British monarch, was diagnosed with cancer and began treatment. The diagnosis came shortly after the king underwent minor prostate surgery. Buckingham Palace said the cancer was not related to the king's recent treatment for a benign enlarged prostate and did not say what type of cancer afflicted the 75-year-old monarch.

Charles was diagnosed with an enlarged prostate on January 17 after he experienced undisclosed symptoms. He canceled his commitments and was ordered to rest before the procedure, which was completed on Friday afternoon. The king decided to announce the operation in advance, hoping to encourage other men to have their prostate checked in line with public health recommendations. Details about the type of cancer were not disclosed.

The king is treated as an outpatient and, according to the palace, he remains fully positive about his treatment, looking forward to a quick return to public duties. He decided to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope that it will help publicly understand the issue of cancer around the world. Many political leaders in the UK, including Prime Minister Rishi Sunak and US President Joe Biden, have expressed support and wishes for a speedy recovery for the king.

News of the cancer diagnosis comes as the king's daughter-in-law, Kate, Duchess of Wales, recovers from abdominal surgery that required hospitalization for about two weeks. Kate continues to take a break from royal duties, and her husband, Prince William, the expected heir to the throne, has also taken time off to care for their three children. However, he plans to preside over the awards ceremony at Windsor Castle and at the charity dinner next Wednesday
