Swimming is the perfect sport for people of all ages. It improves your fitness, helps you lose excess weight, shape your figure, and also helps reduce stress. However, to obtain all these beneficial effects, you must first learn to swim, and this can be a big challenge for many people. That's why we have prepared some tips that may be useful when learning to swim. If you are tired of watching with envy as others cover the lengths of the pool and you want to finally move freely in the water, this short guide is just for you.
- Get used to water. Many people admit that they are afraid of water. Therefore, it is a good idea to start learning to swim on your own close to the edge of the pool, in its shallow part. At the edge, you can practice submerging yourself in the tank, especially submerging your head, as this is usually the most difficult part. Only when we start to perform these activities freely and feel a bit more confident can we gradually move away from the shore? Remember that it may take a long time to get used to the water. However, don't get discouraged. After a few visits to the pool, you will certainly notice improvement.
- Gather the right accessories. A swimsuit, flip-flops, and a swimming cap are, of course, basic equipment. However, before visiting the swimming pool, it is worth purchasing additional accessories. Foam boards or pasta can be very useful. Thanks to them, you will be able to stay afloat more easily and, above all, you will feel safer. If you are afraid of nose or eye irritation, you can also consider buying swimming goggles or special nose clips.
- Master proper breathing. Breathing is the basis of swimming. You can practice it before you enter the water. Inhale as much as you can, then exhale slowly. Thanks to this, you will learn to control the breathing process. While swimming, remember to take in air at the surface so as not to accidentally drink water. At first, you probably can't avoid it, but over time you will master the correct technique.
- Choose the right style. Swimming crawl, breaststroke, butterfly, or maybe backstroke... Every beginner swimmer faces this choice. Most people in the pool swim in the classic style, i.e. breaststroke. Unfortunately, most of them use the wrong technique and keep their heads up all the time, which may adversely affect the vertebrae. Backstroke is a bit easier. When swimming on your back, you engage your entire body and do not burden your spine. Only with time comes the time to learn to crawl swimming. The butterfly style (dolphin) should be left to advanced swimmers, as it requires good fitness and motor coordination.
- Sign up for a course. Even the best tips cannot replace learning under the supervision of a professional. The trainer will adapt the subsequent stages and form of the course to your capabilities. In addition, it will instruct you how to properly use a given swimming technique, which will help you avoid developing bad habits. It is also important that with a trainer we will feel safer in the water.
Learning to swim is sometimes a difficult and time-consuming process, but it is worth making the effort to enjoy health, a slim figure and improve your mood. It is also an excellent way to get back into shape after several weeks of home isolation. Pools in the capital are now open and adapted to operate during the pandemic, so you can start your swimming adventure today.
