UK bans officials from using TikTok on business phones

It turned out that the UK, for national security reasons, will ban the popular short video service TikTok on smartphones and other government-owned devices. Bloomberg writes about this, citing a statement by British Cabinet Secretary Oliver Dowden.

“Britain will immediately block TikTok on government phones,” Dowden wrote on his Twitter account, adding that the move was necessary for security reasons.

According to reports, the decision to ban TikTok came after a review commissioned by British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak. Based on the results of the inspection, the commission concluded that "there are risks associated with access to and use of sensitive government data by certain platforms." Additionally, owners of government devices will only be able to access third-party apps from a pre-approved list.

At the same time, the ban on using TikTok will not apply to the personal devices of government employees. The move is another sign that Western countries are concerned about potential national security threats posed by TikTok and its owner, Chinese company ByteDance. Last year, the U.S. Congress restricted the use of TikTok on government devices. The European Commission also banned its employees from using the application on company devices.
