A dangerous sustained heat wave threatens millions of people in Western Europe

After the second hottest June in history, Western Europe is gearing up for a dangerous second heatwave this summer. All record temperatures have been set this week in the UK, Portugal, Spain, and France, with no relief in sight.

The hot conditions will continue to exacerbate the ongoing wildfires in southwestern Europe. The 14 states of Portugal and eastern Spain have a third-level heat warning by the end of the week, the highest possible.

On Monday, the UK weather bureau issued a "rare" warning of extreme amber on Sunday 17th July as extreme temperatures are expected this week in much of England and Wales. Most of the country has been issued with an extreme heat warning and temperatures will remain consistently high throughout this week.

Record high temperature in Great Britain reaching even 38.7 degrees Celsius this weekend. Some models show maximum temperatures of over 40 degrees Celsius in parts of the UK over the coming weekend and beyond.

There are likely to be negative health effects for the entire population, not just those most exposed to extreme heat, which can lead to serious illnesses or life-threatening conditions. Far more people are likely to visit coastal areas, lakes, and rivers, leading to an increased risk of water safety incidents. In the UK, road closures are also possible due to surface melting, as well as delays in rail and air travel in conditions of intense heat.

Before the heatwave spreads to the UK, it will bring heat to Spain and Portugal, where "extreme" heat warnings, the highest levels, have been issued in 14 states in both countries. In Lisbon and Santarem, temperatures can reach 45 degrees Celsius. The heatwave on the Spanish mainland is expected to last at least until the end of the week, the Spanish weather service said on Monday.

It is not only the Iberian Peninsula that suffers from heat. It will also be hot in France by the end of the week, with temperatures reaching the mid-1930s. The heat warning covers the eastern regions of France, including Toulouse and Bordeaux. The European Region knows this all too well. Europe recorded record highs last month, and June was the second warmest ever.

Maximum daytime temperatures in Spain, France, and Italy exceeded 40 ° C, and extreme heat exacerbated the drought. Much of Italy is also experiencing the summer heatwave. In Verona, temperatures will reach 38 degrees Celsius by Friday. Last week, the Italian government declared a state of emergency for five northern Italian regions amid an extreme drought.
