22 teenagers mysteriously die at a South African nightclub

Authorities are investigating the deaths of 22 young people in a tavern in East London in eastern South Africa. Around 4 a.m. on Sunday, local residents reported the death of Enyobeni's regulars, one of whom was reportedly only 13 years old.

According to local news, the victims "lay strangely, as if they had suddenly fallen to the floor while dancing or talking." Police Minister Beka Chele said the victims, who were under 17 years old, celebrated the end of school exams when an as-yet unexplained incident occurred.

The nightclub was full around 1am, said the owner of the Siyahangela Ndevu tavern. However, Unati Bincose, the security officer who visited the scene early this morning, said panic had been ruled out because the victims "had no visible open wounds."

The local newspaper Dispatch Live reported that, while visiting the scene, they found "bodies lying strangely as if they had suddenly fallen to the floor while dancing or talking." Forensic experts are now investigating the cause of death, including checking the bodies for possible poisons. One of the eyewitnesses to the incident, a young woman, told Al Jazeera that people felt as if they were suffocating.

“The man at the door, I think it was the bouncer, he closed the door and we couldn't breathe. We ran out of breath and pushed each other, but it was useless because some people were dying, ”she said, adding that the room smelled like gas. "I'm not sure if it was tear gas or pepper spray," she said. “Then several people died, and I also fell asleep for three hours. When they woke us up, they thought I was dead. "

The police are asking for any information about what happened to the club's underage guests. The investigation into the mysterious incident continues.
