The space adventure of the creators of New Vegas does not disappoint. The interesting plot and gameplay hide any shortcomings of The Outer Worlds.
The new world created under the watchful eye of the fathers of the Fallout and Arcanum series intrigues and attracts from the very first minutes. Despite the fact that in terms of technical solutions, The Outer Worlds is not an innovative and polished game, none of these aspects matters once we get to know the plot and the universe. It is a great and thoughtful adventure.
In a nutshell, the story is a story about a passenger in a colony ship awakened from hibernation, who "went missing" for nearly 70 years. Thanks to a helpful scientist, we are rescued and sent out into the world to raise funds to save an entire frozen colony.
Of course, the goal of our mission moves aside as soon as we land on the first colonized planet and take up a fight for influence in the most important corporations that currently rule the galaxy. It is a large and rich world full of cynicism. We received criticism from great behemoths, but not pathetic - the comedic mood effectively relieves serious topics, just like in Borderlands.
Obsidian Entertainment studio responsible for the game has found an interesting niche, combining an absurd (in a positive way) and the funny world with an extensive character development system that reflects both on combat and dialogue.
The hero's stats are reflected in every aspect of the game. By creating a charmer focused on conversation and intelligence, we simultaneously gain several advantages that increase the chance of winning in combat by lowering the morale of enemies. On the other hand, when we devote a lot of skill points to the development of combat abilities, we will be able - also with the appearance - to intimidate our interlocutors.
The entire system of character creation and selecting equipment statistics resembles classic RPG games, where every decision matters and sooner or later we will face the consequences of our own actions. This is the biggest advantage of The Outer Worlds - you cannot complain about the excess of such solutions, because they only enrich the adventure.
It's easy to see that when it comes to the appearance of some characters or basic animations, Obsidian still uses the experience and solutions from the Fallout: New Vegas era. Some people may be scared off by the "rubber faces" of several characters, or the bizarre behavior of artificial intelligence during combat. Nevertheless, judging this title just for these mishaps would be highly unfair.
The Outer Worlds is, above all, an effectively and intriguingly designed setting where all the stories seem interesting - and this definitely comes to the fore. In addition, we have a lot of possibilities for solving tasks here, and the pace of the game depends entirely on us.
The game does not overwhelm a huge world, which can be empty and boring in similar games. The maps are smaller, and we travel a lot between locations - using a spaceship piloted by a cute female AI. The level structure is more reminiscent of the Mass Effect series than the 3D Fallouts.
The more linear design of the maps also has an impact on combat, which prompts you to combine, sneak and use your surroundings to your advantage. However, it is impossible not to notice the occasionally strange, outdated behavior patterns of enemies and a moderately pleasant shooting pattern. If we dealt with the latest post-apocalyptic games from Bethesda, we will feel at home.
The crew, completed over time, also travels with us. We take up to two companions to various locations, who offer support during the fight. Comrades also occasionally interfere during dialogues with NPCs, which makes you want to experiment with the selection of the team.
The main plot can be completed in 15 hours, but the presented world deserves much more exploration. Smaller maps allowed the developers to fine-tune even the most insignificant heroes. Most of the side missions are just great fun in a new science-fiction setting. We can easily spend up to 50 hours in the fight against megacorporations.
The Outer Worlds presents itself fresh in terms of the player's narrative and decision system because we have not had such a successful implementation of these elements for a long time. We've just got a great RPG with a unique world, clearly prepared for further story development - we are very curious what Tim Cain and Leo Boyarsky will do with this universe in the future.
Pros:
- the interesting, diverse world
- character development offers a lot of freedom of choice
- interesting and useful companions
- great dialogues
Cons:
- somewhat archaic combat model
- the uneven quality of the visual setting
