DOOM opinion

 At a time when games are mainly associated with such series as GTA or Assassin's Creed the return of a classic such as DOOM seems to be something bordering on suicide. While Call of Duty is fighting for the palm of priority with Battlefield, the return of the father, or in fact a distant grandfather, of the entire genre seems to be a very risky cork that will destroy this brand for good. As it turns out, the magic of Bethesda and id Software brought a complete change, the legend has returned in its unique style, combining the best elements of the past and present. The fusion of two eras meant that players received a brilliant production containing a whole lot of adrenaline and tactics that must be used all the time while playing. Despite the fact that we will devote much more time and attention to shooting, it is worth searching carefully and reading the descriptions of both monsters and places that bring us to Earth, where humanity confronted the very interior of hell. As you can guess, however, our species did not stop at researching or getting to know its inhabitants. Mars has just been attacked by demons who do not think of living peacefully with a human life form. The research station has been dominated and we wake up in the heart of this chaos with no idea who we are or why we are there. However, as it turns out quickly, only we are able to put up a decisive resistance to the invaders. We will get to know the story through conversations with the characters ... well, monologues, because Doom Marine does not speak even once and only listens to what others have to say to him. Our hero does not show his emotions through words, but his behavior and gestures suggest his feelings and opinions on a given topic. It looks good and, surprisingly, supports our willingness to learn the secrets or details that will bring us closer to the image of the world before the invasion. The plot base is not complicated, it does not contain any original ideas, but it has been properly presented, thanks to which it is not monotonous for us.



 The descriptions of places, weapons, especially monsters, and attempts to tame them by the greatest minds in the world are really interesting. UAC was involved a lot in this operation, which, as it turns out, was not doomed to success, nor did it run smoothly. It is impossible not to touch on a few more issues in this matter, unfortunately, grenades and creating a hologram do not bring the desired result and as a result, I completely forgot that such a possibility was in the game. DOOM gains a lot, however, thanks to the Glory Kills mechanics, i.e. special, brutal finishes with which we will regain some health. The maps have been designed so that moving around always allows us to get a better perspective. Lots of secret passages, shortcuts, and alleys hiding valuable prizes, this is how locations should be designed. In addition, the developers were tempted to include certain stages known from the first installments of the series, thanks to which we can again check-in places created from Sprites. Many players will surely feel the sentiment and remember those special times when first-person titles were just building their position on the market.



The system of improving our character is implemented on the level of the Praetor's Suit and weapons, which we develop in two ways. First, we are looking for upgrades that flying robots have. Doom Marine will take the package from them by force, and we will choose what interests us the most. One of the two attachments will be attached to our weapons, of course having two, we will be able to exchange them without any problems. The received tree allows us to invest our tokens in additional perks (two or three), which will allow us to make a great upgrade. Most of them can be unlocked by eliminating enemies in an effective way or by completing the challenges commissioned at the beginning of the mission. The armor will require special components, which we will receive from the armor of the dead Elite Guardians. Each of the five departments has three slots that develop the unique skills of our protagonist.
The great balance of the game should be appreciated, which remained at an even, high level throughout the campaign. It is thanks to proper planning that obtaining a new "popper" did not strengthen our power, but only increased flexibility and extended tactical maneuvers. The difficulty level allowed us to go crazy all the time, while slowly leading us to even critical situations. However, it was when saving ourselves from them that we felt the greatest satisfaction in our combat operations.
The visual setting is at a very high level in every respect, each place we visit looks phenomenal. Both the Research Center of the UAC organization on Mars and the Dark World of Hell, which certainly none of us would like to be in, not for a moment ... The characters and monsters have been refined in every detail, as are the buildings and caves in which all the time we feel the influence of demonic powers. Numerous details and traces of the fight allow us to imagine what slaughter had to take place in this center, how many innocent people have been sentenced to a brutal death. We see dismembered bodies almost everywhere that bear witness to the massacre of humanity. Delving into more and more closed areas, we see the influence on the psyche of visitors from a different, powerful dimension. They have left their mark on the psyche of weak people who follow the promises of new saviors….
The design of the location is not only a brilliant combination of the aesthetics of scientific laboratories with the mass of Gore elements but also a nice transformation of what we know into something a bit more distant in time. We see a future close to our reality, more technologically advanced, but not looking like an invention or an image taken from the next millennia. This is not a universe close to, for example, Mass Effect, but a near vision of the world following a "wonderful" discovery. Visiting successive stages builds an interesting picture in our imagination, presents us with possible events, does not explain everything.
Traveling the complex from point A to B can theoretically seem boring, considering that the vast majority of large battles take place in predetermined areas. Fortunately, not only horizontally but also vertically moving is of great importance, allowing us to constantly change position and look for an advantage. Secrets have also been carefully hidden, often containing not only cute Marine Doom figures, but also additional ammunition, life, or armor. If like me, you are crazy about unlocking these types of things, I recommend that you first focus on the armor tree responsible for the environment scanner (and for discovering everything on the map). We have to spend some chips on it, but the advantage we get is worth it. The rewards are very often well hidden and it is really hard to find them without proper attention and perceptiveness.
I have already mentioned how brilliant all weapons sound, and you could say the same about monsters. When we hear a creature appearing, we immediately know what we will have to face. We immediately see that these are not mutated animals, but completely new life forms. In Doom, you simply cannot underestimate how, thanks to the powerful sounds, we have the impression of infernal closeness to the "poppers" and we can perfectly feel their power with each shot.

id Software has proved that after many years it still knows what is good and how to create great hits. Departure from the patterns and return to the roots resulted in the creation of an excellent game in which we find a lot of thoughtful and satisfying solutions. The Kills of Glory perfectly illustrate the direction in which the developers decided to go and how successfully it is possible to translate ideas into gameplay language. The fact that such a strong brand returns after many years was amazing and showed everyone not only that DOOM still matters, but also that a very good Remake could turn out to be a completely new opening for the series for the coming years.
